The 21st century is characterized by a series of technological changes and advances that impact the economy and global society. This leads to new challenges for Higher Education in the training of future professionals and critical citizens, with the ability to adapt to a versatile and constantly changing world.

Several years ago, school education was more focused on the transfer of information and knowledge. Then he focused on developing skills. Now the focus is on developing 21st century skills.

The term 21st century skills refers to the knowledge, skills, habits, attitudes, and emotions that enable students to succeed in college, university, and life.

21st century skills are skills that young people should have right now. They focus on the development of the socio-emotional part of each individual, something fundamental to promote personal and professional success according to different specialists and leaders from different industries; Those who identify that there is a gap between the skills needed in jobs with the skills and knowledge of the current workforce.

These skills are very important as they will help these people face the world of today and the future. It is clear that the jobs that exist today are changing, with the creation of new jobs that require different skills in order to respond to them. As educators we must prepare students for their lives.

What are the skills of the 21st century?

21st century skills are also known as soft, generic, interdisciplinary, or citizen skills, among other names. These skills are part of a wide range of skills, ranging from non-cognitively focused skills to complex skills that require rare skills.

  • Creativity: it allows to relate and modify concepts, generate new ideas for the personal or work environment and create innovative ventures or projects.
  • Critical thinking: In a world awash with conflicting ideas, lacking in arguments, misleading headlines, negative news, and misinformation, learning the critical thinking skill helps find the signal in the midst of chaos.
  • Problem solving: it is the ability to understand a situation and evaluate different ways of solving it, dimensioning its impact.
  • Communication: is the ability to clearly share a message orally, in writing, verbally, and non-verbally.
  • Determination: Determination is defined as “passion and perseverance in achieving long-term goals”. Teaching children not to give up, to keep trying, and to try new ideas to achieve something they are passionate about is crucial.
  • Perseverance: passion is related to having a mission in life, a call every morning. The most valuable resource for humanity is the persistent and passionate human mind, so the future of children who identify their passion is very important.
  • Emotional intelligence: emotional intelligence helps us to know how to know the emotions of others and express ours, and it is very important to develop it from childhood.

Although not all specialists agree on how the competencies described above are grouped together, there is a general consensus on the type of skills that students must develop to succeed in an increasingly complex world of work and life.
