Self-esteem influences the learning process

Self-esteem is a personal feeling in which the student attributes value to himself. It can be said that a student has high self-esteem when he knows what he is capable of doing, I know the same for what he does and for whoever he is. This is a quality that must be stimulated in all people, even more so in childhood. When learning, it is important to have high self-esteem in order to give your best in the process.

Self-esteem is also defined as the experience of having the ability to face life’s challenges and be worthy of happiness.

People who have authentic and healthy self-esteem see themselves as responsible, constructive, and at the same time trustworthy. It is a personal feeling by which a student attaches value to himself.

During the preschool stage, the child learns certain generalized attitudes about himself. He begins to compare himself with those whom he wishes to resemble, and to formulate a series of ideas. For this reason, the first attitudes during childhood are key to the formation of their self-concept.

Self-esteem is made up of 3 main components: The first component is the cognitive one, which refers to the set of ideas, beliefs and perceptions that the individual presents. The second component is the affective one, which implies those favorable or unfavorable feelings that the subject feels. And finally, the behavioral component which refers to the performance of the individual by himself.

Self-esteem has a lot of influence on the learning process since a student with a high self-esteem will be able to perform better during the educational process.

On the other hand, a student who has a positive image of himself may be in the best disposition to learn as well as the possibility of facing the problems that appear during the teaching-learning process.

Another benefit offered by having adequate self-esteem applied to the educational process, is the possibility of fostering creativity in the student, developing autonomously as well as relating in a better way with other individuals.

Having high self-esteem will facilitate the learning process in the student since it will allow them to be sure of themselves, feel competent, valuable and have the ability to make their own decisions according to what is best for them.

On the contrary, the subject who has low self-esteem is usually suspicious of himself and others, shy, uncreative, showing apathy and even presenting aggressive and challenging behaviors.

To have high self-esteem, it is necessary to change some habits and customs that only feed a negative vision of ourselves.

Here are 6 tips to raise the self-esteem of any student, and they will be useful for you or to advise a friend.

1. Do not compare yourself with others: remember that each person is unique and unrepeatable, so there is no point in comparing yourself to anyone else. If you are constantly watching your fellow students, your self-esteem will be affected because you will not always be the best in everything you do.

2. Set goals: if you set certain (real) goals in your life, such as finishing a career, learning a skill, etc., when you reach them you will feel very good about yourself. Make sure to set possible goals in the short and medium term and every day do your best to achieve them.

3. Don’t push yourself too hard: one of the biggest problems of lack of self-esteem is the extreme demand of people. You cannot be perfect in everything you do, or work and study thousands of hours and that everything turns out well. Be realistic and do not demand of yourself more than what you can physically and mentally give.

4. Be grateful: people who have a negative perception of themselves are usually dissatisfied with their life, and forget to thank for what they have. Keep in mind all the good things in your life and your achievements to appreciate a little more the position you are in and yourself.

5. Do not seek the approval of others: this is something we do unconsciously but almost systematically. To avoid letting your life revolve around others, think when you are going to make a decision, if you make it based on your criteria or just to please others. If you constantly seek approval, you leave no room for self-love.

6. Accept yourself as you are: it is one of the key points to have high self-esteem. Know both your abilities and your limitations and do not feel rejection of the latter. We all have flaws and it is these that make us unique. Accept them and accept them to lead a full life.
